Woah, and look at those femora in the forelegs! It seems the male wants to make sure he gets a good grip while at it.
He’d need to hold tight, as I can’t imagine the female wanting that thing attached to her for any longer than necessary!
That puts to shame Petersen’s Noonilla copiosa (see p. 7 of http://antbase.org/ants/publications/4250/4250.pdf). I hope to rediscover this species in Palawan late this year.

Noonilla still seems rather impressive, and looking at Peteresen’s illustration, I wonder if maybe it’s another, rather less “hung” species of Protanilla
PS — Not sure “navel-gazing” is quite the right designation for this.

Madness – I had no idea there were male ant genitals as large as that! I can only imagine what the act of mating in that species looks like P_P
